Android doubled its world market share in one year

Google Android ranks as the top and fastest growing smartphone platform worldwide. In one year, Android doubled its market share from 25.3% in the third quarter of 2011 to the current 52.5%. Overall, there were more than 60 million Android devices sold in the third quarter of 2011. The smartphone market keeps growing fast. Worldwide smartphone sales rose from 81 million units in the third quarter of 2010 to a new high of 115 million units in the third quarter of 2011.

Worldwide smartphone market grew by 42% in one year

Nearly every major mobile platform has decreased in market share since the third quarter of 2011. Apple iOS now accounts for 15% of worldwide smartphone sales, down from 16.6% a year ago. Blackberry RIM accounts for 11% of sales, down from 15.4%. Microsoft faces difficulties on the smartphone market. Only 1.7 million Windows smartphones were sold in the third quarter of 2011, which represents a tiny market share of  1.5%. Windows Mobile is the only platform that showed a decline in its sales in volume since last year.
