Mobile-PC sales declined 13% in Europe in the third quarter of 2011

Nearly 15 million personal computers were shipped in Western Europe in the third quarter of 2011, according to data from Gartner. PC shipments were down 11.4% compared to the same period last year. Paradoxically, mobile-PC sales declined even faster than the desktop-PC sales. Desktop PC shipments dropped by 8.7% in the third quarter of 2011 whereas mobile-PC shipments fell by 12.6% compared to the same period last year.

The consumer segment showed the greatest decline, with a 18.8% decrease year-on-year, compared to a drop of only 2.1% for the professional segment. Two reasons account for this phenomenon. Firstly, economic issues in Europe impact consumers’ will to buy new technology equipment. Secondly, smartphones and tablets represent cheaper and more convenient alternatives to personal computers for leisure use.
