20% of SMBs employ someone to manage their social media marketing
Small and mid-sized businesses are increasingly relying on social media marketing. Nearly half of SMBs (44%) surveyed in the United States utilize social media to market to customers. Facebook is the leading social media platform. Of those using social media marketing, an overwhelming majority (86%) have Facebook accounts.
6% of SMBs hire consultants to manage their social media marketing
Most small and mid-sized businesses do not hire new employees to take care of their social media marketing. 74% of SMBs do not employ anyone to manage their social media marketing. 20% report employing someone either full-time (8%) or part-time (12%) to take care of that. Only 6% of SMBs report employing a consultant to manage their social media marketing.

We have found that many of our clients do not have the time or expertise to devote to Social Media. We prefer to work closely with someone in the company, to keep the social media posts fresh and relevant

Most consumers “follow” or “like” a brand on a social network because they want to feel privileged and have inside stories. I don’t see why a PR agency could not take care of a company’s social media marketing as long as there is a close collaboration.
