76% of adults go online on a typical day (US)

The number of internet users is growing. 76% of adults in the United States go online in a typical day, compared to 66% in August 2006 and 50% in August 2000. Internet users increasingly go online just for fun or to pass the time. In 2011, 44% of internet users go online for no particular reason on a typical day, compared to 28% in April 2006 and 19% in August 2000. The survey did not ask about specific online activities, respondents were allowed to report being online just for “fun” however they defined the term.

53% of young adults go online for no particular reason on a typical day

Even though many adults go online in purposeful ways, their internet use can at times be for the diversion it presents. Overall, 74% of internet users report having used the internet for this reason at least occasionally, compared to 62% in April 2006 and 66% in August 2000. Young adults particularly use the internet as a diversion. On any given day, 53% of all  the young adults aged between 18 and 29 go online for no particular reason except to have fun or pass the time, compared to 16% in 2000.
